St John University Collective Bargaining Agreement

Other tactics have also been tried. Some faculties sued the university for fraud for adding its names to the 1966 catalog. [6] Picket lines increased in the spring of 1966 and during the inaugural consultation in the autumn of 1966. [7] Although the strike failed, especially since it was not rehired, the strike established the AFT as the exceptional union organized by the American university faculty. [5] Kugler quickly drew UFCT`s attention to other colleges and universities in the New York City area. In the following years, the union, under his leadership, organized premises at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Nassau Community College, and Westchester Community College. [10] In 1967, Kugler began rushing to the UFCT to organize the faculty at CUNY. Supported by the AFT and the newly created (and politically powerful) Teachers` Federation, the UFCT not only won a deal for a union election, but it also won the December 6, 1968 elections in the face of a resolute challenge from the AAUP. The union won a second choice nine days later (this time for non-permanent faculties) and nine months later, a signed contract. [11] [12] The strike ended in June 1967.

The union was not recognized in Saint John, and in 1970, the arbitrators decided that the university had not acted inappropriately. [9] The strike in Saint John began on January 4, 1966. In December 1965, the union insisted on mediation and arbitration, but the university refused to submit to both. With the tactics developed by Albert Shanker to win collective bargaining rights for teachers in New York Public Schools, Kugler insisted that local and government officials interfere in the dispute. Only a minority of the Faculty of St. John left the university and forced the university to close some classes, but not the majority of classes. [3] In the spring of 1967, as the strike threatened to be extended to other Catholic universities across the country and state legislators opened hearings on the labor dispute, the university agreed to arbitration. [8] Over the next two years, Kugler twice challenged the university`s accreditation before the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. But this body only warned the university and took no further action. [4] The SJU Faculty Association is the union collective bargaining unit responsible for negotiating contracts, representing in administrative and human situations, and disseminating information about workplace rights to full-time members and teachers in St.
